La Coruña (also known as A Coruña in Galician) is the capital of the province. Historically, it has been a great port. It is situated on the northwest coast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Rías Altas. The peninsula and is divided into two halves, the port (near the estuary of La Coruña) and another half which is open sea, where the beaches of Riazor and Orzán extend.
The municipality has a population of 244,099 inhabitants and is the second most populous in Galicia after Vigo.
