We travel to the city of the Calatrava with the Chapín Group bus. The castle of Calatrava is a great fortress of the Calatravian knights, whose property they defended against the Muslims of the nearby castle of Salvatierra.
The fortress is from the bronze age, Visigoth. Some sources indicates that the noble of Castilla Nuño de Lara inhabited it in the XII century. The castle had its great splendour in the great battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
Today we can walk along its roads and the dependencies of the castle. Its convent of the XIII th century conserves a great door with a star shape rosette, the chapter house, refectory and kitchens, besides the cemetery. The auxiliary areas of artisans, lodgings, stables and cellars complete this magnificent portrait of the life in the Middle Ages.
The magnificent fortress of the Calatravos, with more than 45,000 m², was erected to be the great headquarters of the order, replacing the city of Calatrava la Vieja. Its church, convent, village hostel and external enclosure, surrounded by fortifications, formed an authentic medieval fortified city
