Saint-Malo is a French seaside resort located in the Brittany region, more precisely in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. The walled city is one of the most visited in Brittany and its population reaches 200.00 inhabitants during the summer. It is an important port (both recreational, for fishing purposes, but also for logistics purposes whether for travellers and for merchandise). Its historic centre is characterized by being fortified and its construction dates goes back to the 13th century.
Its Gallo-Roman port allowed the construction of a citadel founded on a small island in the 12th century. From here sailed, in the sixteenth century, Jacques Cartier to discover Canada, as well as the fishing boats that arrived to Terranova. The shipowners made their fortune and the city prospered inside its walls, wall that were enlarged by the disciples of the architect Vauban. In the 18th century, the corsairs Duguay-Trouin and Surcouf reaffirmed Saint-Malo´s prestige, whose banner floats above the French flag.
And what can we visit in Saint-Malo?
- The urban rampart which is composed of towers from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, curtains and bastions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
- The castle with its great tower of the year 1424, the general tower of the year 1475, the Quic-en-Groigne tower (1498 – 1501) and the tower of Dames and des Moulins of the 16th century.
- The national fort, built in 1689 by Vauban and Garangeau.
- The Petit Bé, “the best and the most beautiful of all our forts”, Vauban 1695.
- The Saint-Vincent cathedral.
- The Solidor tower, triple tower from the 16th century.
- The fort of the Cité d’Alet, from the 18th century.
- The Sainte-Croix and Saint-Ideuc churches.
