This time we travelled to Volendam, a fishing corner which is very close to Amsterdam.
It is one of those corners of the world where the word walking takes on another meaning. Walk through its streets, stroll while watching the boats, photograph yourself next to picturesque buildings or with the inhabitants of the city who often wear traditional costumes.
Volendam is located quite close to Amsterdam on Lake Ijssel. It is known for its charming harbour, its fish trade, its authentic Dutch character and traditional costumes.
What to see or do in Volendam?
- Volendam’s pop music is known as the Palingsound (eel sound). Paling (eel in Dutch) is a reference to the eels that live in Volendam. In the Palingsound Museum, you will discover the distinctive features of this musical style.
- In the same building of the Palingsound Museum in the port, you will find the eel smokehouse Smit Bokkum, which belongs to the museum’s founder, Jan Smit. During a guided tour, visitors will discover how the eel is smoked with a traditional method.
In the Volendams Museum, traditional village costumes are exhibited, as well as rooms of the last century with the original distribution. You can also admire ship models, paintings and other works of art.- Walk, walk and walk. It is a city to enjoy on a beautiful walk.
