Albuquerque is a municipality in Extremadura, belonging to the province of Badajoz and it is located in the Sierra de San Pedro, right in the port of Albahacar and very close to Portugal.
When you walk down its streets, you will find the following places to visit:
- Luna Castle: it was built in the thirteenth century and it is one of the most interesting castles to visit in Extremadura.
- Church of Santa María del Castillo: it is situated in the courtyard of the fortress of the Castle.
- Medieval neighbourhood “Villa Adentro”: this is the name of the city enclosed inside Alburquerque´s rampart. It is also known as “Barrio de la Teta Negra”.
- Church of Santa María del Mercado: it is located in the Villa Adentro area. The moment of its construction is not known, but it is believed that it was earlier than the fifteenth century.
- Hermitage of Our Lady of Solitude: it is a 17th-century construction and it is currently used as a restaurant.
- Convent of the Mother of God and Church of San Francisco: it is divided into three parts: one that corresponds to the bishopric, another that belongs to the town hall and another that is privately owned.
- Church of San Mateo: it dates from the 16th century and was built on the same spot where the former hermitage of Albuquerque, which was used to accommodate the remains of the deceased Christians in the Villa Adentro.
